J-XSTAPOSE VOL 1

Volume one of Mhost Likely Black's new digital V/A series: J-XSTAPOSE. Four talented Scandinavian techno producers, Fredrik Bekkaasen, Hank The Gorilla, Naboklage, and Ida Nerbø, venture into rave territory to showcase various spectres of the Nordic techno palette.

Kicking things off is Oslo-based raver Fredrik Bekkaasen. From raves comes inspiration, and ‘Stutauget’, is a backdrop for the dense forest raves that occur around various locations around Oslo city. The throbbing doof and anxious soundscapes of ‘Stautauget’ melt into the raver's soul; hypnotic rhythms and eyes widen on its six-minute journey. An instant Oslo rave classic.

Stockholm-based Hank The Gorilla continues the journey into the euphoria before the track takes a transcended turn - mind-altering synth melodies, sending a signal for those willing to hear it. ‘Zephyr’ finds the innovative balance between grit and emotions; synths and anxious rhythms provide that beauty can be found even in the murkiest of sounds.

The galloping vibes on ‘Piracy’ is a welcome switch-up from young-gun Naboklage. Its punchy kicks and distorted aesthetic invite the listener to dance as bizarre as they want before the track drops in favour of a hefty cut-off breakbeat — a track nodding to late 90’s Schranz Techno.

Hypnotic atmospherics, dark pads, and nervous energy blow us out on ‘Strand’, completing the package with a downtempo techno track from Ida Nerbø. The stripped-back tracks show Ida Nærbø’s ability to use only a few nuanced sounds in both a playful and endearing way while leading us perfectly down the meandering path to the record's closing sequence.
